Investing in stocks can be intimidating. Many advisors recommend that investors buy an index fund, as individual stocks are deemed too complex. Funds are suitable for a significant portion of your portfolio, but stocks can help enhance your overall returns. Learning to own individual stocks will educate you about different funds, companies, the economy, and help your career.
Stock Recommendations
I will provide timely stock recommendations for companies every week. Stocks will be labeled Conservative, Moderate, and Aggressive to help invesotrs build a portfolio that suits individual risk tolerance. It’s best to own a balance of all stocks in a diversified portfolio.

Stay Informed
Use the Stocks app on your phone to track your stocks that you are following and researching. Add the NASDAQ Composite, the S&P 500 INDEX, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average to the top of your screen, then add your stocks below. That way, you’ll know if the ups and downs of your stocks are just a product of a good or bad day for the stock market. Or, if it’s because of news on your stocks.
Diversify
If you’ve never owned a stock before, make it a goal to own 7 to 10 stocks or more. Don’t just buy one or two stocks. This approach is fundamental to long-term investing success. Some stocks will be winners, and some won’t work out as planned. Although the stock market has averaged 10.6% annual returns since 1937, your experience will likely vary.
Risk Tolerance
One essential tip is to start by understanding your risk tolerance. Know how much risk you’re willing to take. How uncomfortable would it be if many of your stocks were up but others were down 10% to 20%? How will you prepare if the stock market experiences good and bad years, due to economic or political risks?
Stock investing is both rewarding and humbling. Many stocks will rise in value, but some won’t. It’s essential to manage expectations and risk while adjusting your stocks.
