Meta Platforms: A Social Media & Family of Apps Profile

You know Facebook and Instagram, but what about Meta’s new AI agent, Muse? A look at its early adoption, Meta’s advertising growth, and the costs behind its expanding AI ambitions.

Meta Platforms is the world’s largest social media platform. The company’s portfolio has evolved from the Facebook app to multiple apps, including the photo and video-sharing app Instagram and the WhatsApp messaging app, largely through acquisitions.

Along with in-house-developed Messenger and newer services such as Threads and Muse, these products form Meta’s Family of Apps, which reached about 3.60 billion daily active people on average in June 2026. Meta generated $200.9 billion in revenue in 2025. Advertising accounted for 97.6% of revenue. Headquartered in Menlo Park, CA.

Keys for Success

Muse Launch

On September 8, 2026, Meta introduced Muse as a personal AI agent designed to help complete tasks across websites and connected services. Examples include travel planning, shopping, reservations, and administrative work.

The distinction between a chatbot and an agent centers on its ability to take action using tools. It is not exclusive to Muse: ChatGPT also offers agent capabilities. Task completion depends on available access, permissions, website compatibility, and the system’s reliability.

Muse’s early adoption has attracted attention. Sensor Tower estimates reported in late September indicated more than 5 million downloads. Downloads measure initial interest; however, they do not reflect sustained usage or profitability.

Meta also outlined how it plans to get paid. Muse offers free and paid tiers and expects to take a small fee on the transactions Muse handles over time.

AI-Led Ad Performance: Meta’s scale in data and distribution supports faster iterations in both consumer experiences and ad performance. In 2Q2026, Family of Apps revenue rose 28% to $60.4 billion as ad impressions increased 14% and average price per ad increased 12%. Advantage+ reached more than $75 billion in annual revenue run-rate.

Recommendation Gains: Recommendation work continues to translate into higher usage, which supports time spent and monetization capacity. In 2Q2026, Instagram time spent grew double-digit, while Facebook video time rose 9% globally. Meta’s largest single-release Reels ranking upgrade drove a 15-basis-point increase in Instagram sessions, with gains in reshares and time spent. Threads has reached 500 million monthly active users.

Funding Flexibility: Meta ended 2Q2026 with $90.3 billion in cash and $83.7 billion in debt, while operating cash flow was $31.9 billion. Meta’s liquidity supports funding flexibility. The company is also broadening its funding sources, including a strategic venture with BlackRock to build a new 1GW data center in Texas.

Earnings Durability: Over the past 10 years, Meta’s EPS growth has been 20.9%. Earnings expansion has followed a comparatively consistent long-term path rather than relying on a few isolated periods. Meta’s advertising scale, improving recommendation systems, and expanding WhatsApp monetization support that durability.

Keys for Concern

Meta is prioritizing personal agents, business agents, model APIs, and other AI experiences before the economics of these products are fully established. As infrastructure expands ahead of these revenue streams, investors may remain focused on whether new AI products can generate returns that justify the rising compute base. In 2Q2026, total expenses rose 55% to $42 billion, including $2.4 billion of legal charges and $1.2 billion of severance expense. The operating margin fell to 31% from 43% a year earlier, although operating income would have risen 9% excluding those charges.

Meta still operates in crowded markets for both users and advertising spend. Alphabet, Amazon, YouTube, Snap and other social and commerce platforms continue to compete for engagement and marketing budgets. Meta continues to face scrutiny over privacy, safety and competition, which can raise costs and create uncertainty around product and advertising practices.

Mark Notes

Meta’s new Muse AI agent is driving the stock price. According to new analysis from Sensor Tower, Muse brings back 73% of new users the day after they install it. That is almost twice OpenAI’s ChatGPT. But Muse loses users quickly, and ChatGPT jumps ahead between days eight and nine. Even so, Muse retains enough users to keep it in second place behind ChatGPT. This week, Meta added Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full to its app family.

However, Muse has reportedly hit a new hurdle: Some websites, including Amazon (AMZN), are blocking AI agents from browsing or completing purchases. If more websites treat AI agents as bots or security risks, Muse’s usefulness could be limited, which could dent the stock’s new bullish case that developed since the agent’s September launch.

Meanwhile, Family of Apps revenue, which accounts for 99.3% of total revenue, rose 28% year over year to $60.37 billion. Family of Apps other revenues jumped 72.7% year over year to $1.01 billion, surpassing $1 billion for the first time. Meta is a Magnificent 7 stock with a market cap of $1.18 trillion.

My takeaway is that Meta combines a large advertising business with substantial investment in newer AI services. Muse’s early adoption is notable, but repeat usage, reliable task completion, and serving costs provide a fuller picture than downloads alone.
