New to Investing? Start Here.

Many followers of Stockmark101 are new, while some have been with me for over a year. It’s impossible for me to know each of my readers’ levels of experience. Beginners are often overwhelmed by the many choices and ways to invest in the stock market.

It’s important to remember that the foundation of any 401k or investment account is an individual stock. A mutual fund, index fund, exchange-traded fund (ETF), or REIT comprises a diversified basket of stocks. Learning the fundamentals, like what stocks are and how they work, is essential for all investors.

About This Page

Stockmark101.com is a free educational site focused on explaining how stocks and markets work. Company write-ups reflect general market commentary and publicly available information and are used to illustrate business fundamentals and market behavior — not to provide personalized investment advice.

Individual Stocks or Funds

Investing in individual stocks is riskier than investing in a diversified fund that holds a basket of 30 to 70 stocks. However, some funds can be riskier than others. Greater risk can mean greater reward. Beginners can learn to build their own portfolio of many individual stocks, like professionals, over time.

There are thousands of investment options. There are approximately 5,100 to 5,500 stocks trading on U.S. stock exchanges. Plus, there are approximately 9,000 mutual funds and 5,000 index and exchange-traded funds. Each fund has a different goal and risk profile.

If a beginner wants to invest in funds more than in stocks, it’s still critical to learn about individual stocks, sectors & industries, growth vs. value, cyclical vs. defensive, and other topics.  Different funds are structured to serve these subsets of the market and investing classes.

Without understanding what these mean, beginners won’t know which fund is most timely or right for them. These topics are discussed in my course and on my free websites.

Mark Notes

I played Division 1 college football as a running back and was an All-WAC Academic All-American. We ended my senior year ranked #7. To play football, you need to learn the fundamentals early: blocking, tackling, running, and sometimes throwing and kicking. These skills are the foundation. Then, you learn positions, offenses, and defenses.

This also applies to investing in the stock market. The fundamentals are learning about individual stocks and how they work. Learning your position means determining which approach works for you. Picking an offense means your approach could be mostly funds and a few stocks or mostly individual stocks.

I’ll continue posting free educational content here just as I always have. The course is simply a more structured way to learn the fundamentals from start to finish if you’d like to go deeper.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Stockark101 along the way. I hope you find the course helpful as you continue your investing journey.
