How it works:
- Mark writes content for the Stockmark101.com website. The full-page original reports are more direct, free-flowing, include a table of financials, and read like an analyst report.
- The reports are altered to conform to Facebook community standards and posted to the StockMark101.com Facebook Page the same day.
- The optional online course is ideal for a new follower who wants to go from novice to a new investor with everything they need to buy a stock. The course offers a structured introduction for readers who prefer lessons and demonstrations.
The pictures and titles on the website and Facebook are the same, but the content is different. The website reports are more in-depth and flow from Mark’s background. If you like the Facebook feed, you can sign up for optional email alerts of bi-weekly reports on the website.
A Beginner’s Perspective
Many StockMark101 followers are new, while others have been with me for more than a year. It’s impossible for me to know each reader’s level of investing experience.
Understanding individual stocks can help explain what many stock funds hold.
Most investment portfolios begin with individual stocks. Mutual funds, index funds, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) generally hold diversified collections of stocks. Learning how stocks work can help you better understand how these fund investment options are structured and how they differ.
Individual Stocks and Funds
Investing in individual stocks generally involves different risks than investing in a diversified fund that holds a basket of stocks. Different types of funds also have different objectives and risk profiles.
Beginners are often overwhelmed by the many ways to invest in the stock market. Approximately 5,100 to 5,500 stocks trade on U.S. exchanges. In addition, there are roughly 9,000 mutual funds and about 5,000 index funds and ETFs. Each fund has its own investment objective and characteristics.
Even if someone plans to invest primarily in funds rather than individual stocks, understanding topics such as stock fundamentals, sectors and industries, growth vs. value, and cyclical vs. defensive businesses can make it easier to understand how different funds are designed and what types of investments they hold.
Mark Notes
I played Division I college football as a running back and was an All-WAC Academic All-American. Before any player could learn the offense, they first had to master the fundamentals: blocking, tackling, running, and sometimes throwing and kicking. Those skills became the foundation. Only then did players learn positions, offensive schemes, and defensive strategies.
Investing is similar. Learning how individual stocks work can provide a foundation for understanding mutual funds, ETFs, and other investment structures. Just as every football player develops a role within a team, many investors eventually develop an investing style that reflects their own goals and preferences.
